Winter is in sight! Despite the fact that winter is filled with cozy evenings, Christmas with family or beautiful snow. working days in the cold are no fun. As an electrician, plumber, welder or painter at Techvisie, you mainly work outside. How do you make working outside in the cold more pleasant? Techvisie gives you 5 tips to get through the winter. Curious? Then read on quickly!
Tip #1: Dress warmly
The very first tip is of course to dress warmly. Think of dressing in layers, to insulate your body, as it were, and so you maintain the body temperature. Techvisie has designed a number of garments to make it more pleasant for you to work outside in the winter, below you can see a photo of our intern Daisy showing the clothing.
It might also be useful to buy a nice thick pair of socks, think about thin gloves for under your work gloves or buy a neck warmer (not a scarf, for safety reasons!), so that you can best insulate yourself against the inclement weather .
Tip #2: Hand or foot warmers
Although good clothing is very important when working in the cold, it may not be enough. We therefore advise you to see if you can score warmer somewhere. These Decathlon.com hand warmers activate through contact with the air and work for up to 6 hours! This package of 30 pieces costs € 14.99, which is only € 0.49 each! Please note: for safety reasons, you are not allowed to hold these hand warmers in the palm of your hand, but you can wear them in a glove on the back of the hand. These foot warmers cost the same, but are self-adhesive! This way your hands and feet stay nice and warm during work.
Tip #3: Stay hydrated
While working in the cold, it is important to get enough moisture. In addition to exerting physical effort when working, the body must also keep itself warm. For example, choose a nice cup of tea or a hot chocolate (with whipped cream!). Your body needs about 1.5 liters of water a day, so try to pay attention to this to prevent dehydration.
We often suffer from itchy, dry skin in the winter months, because the humidity is much lower in the winter. To prevent this annoying itching, you can buy a greasy cream, for example from Nivea. You can apply this cream on chapped areas, your hands and your face.
Tip #4: Eat well
To give your body enough energy to keep itself warm, it is important to eat a good and healthy diet. Make sure you get enough protein (found in chicken, fish and dairy), because the combustion of this creates heat. Vitamins are also important, for example vitamin A (for the immune system). A winter recipe full of vitamins is hutspot, a meal with mashed vegetables. This stew is best eaten with smoked sausage or stewed meat, but it can also be eaten with chicken to get enough protein. An important vitamin for the winter is vitamin D, which ensures strong muscles and bones (handy for work!) and influences your mood. Vitamin D can be found in oily fish, meat or eggs.
Do you like a glass of wine or beer with dinner? Maybe you’d better leave that bottle alone. Alcohol causes the body temperature to drop, which means that you can become hypothermic more quickly, even though you may feel warmer for a while.
Tip #5: Find distractions
The last tip is to seek distraction from the cold, because the more you think about the cold, the colder you get. It is best to ensure that you stop shivering, because you use muscles and that costs energy that can be better preserved. If you want to stop shivering, you need to relax or seek distraction. You can relax with a short breathing exercise. For a distraction from the cold, ask your colleagues about their weekend or sing along to your favorite songs on the radio!
